On Sept. 28, 2011 we visited Simmons Farm in McMurray, PA. The field trip supplemented our science curriculum and allowed the children to experience the process in our lesson on "Apples: Farm to Home." In addition, the kids had a great time and brought home some yummy apples to share with their families. Farmer Scott talked about the changes the apple trees go through during the different seasons and what the farmers do to help the trees to produce the best apples. The kindergartners walked out to the orchard to pick their own apples and then we went into the barn where the fruits and vegetables are washed and stored in the giant refrigerator. It was really cold inside! We also saw the Simmons trucks that are used to transport the apples to market. Before boarding the bus, we had a chance to pet the animals in the petting zoo. It was a fun and interesting trip for the children!
